CSTM R&D Solutions specializes in definition realization and implementation of custom equipment for manufacturing lines. The company has accumulated much knowledge in realizing testers of many kinds workbenches and work stations.
The company also undertakes customizing work of tools for manufacturing: from automatic dosage of hazardous materials - while protecting workers and the environment, to simple jigs and fixtures designated to carry out or aid processing tasks such as gripping   clamping, cutting, bending, stretching, polishing, bonding, welding, calibration, fixation, curing  etc.

A  fixture for bending even and odd leads. A pre-soldering processing step.


Custom lead bending tool
A tool for bending the leads of an amplifier (APEX-PA75CD), supplied with straight leads.
Bending of 90° was required in order to allow through-hole soldering of the amplifier in contact with a heat sink. The odd and the even leads had to be bent at different locations, in a way that the original one row of leads will be transformed into two rows of leads. The picture on the left shows the amplifier before and after bending.

RF circuit tester
Resistance measurement test in an RF line, which allows to discover irregularities in the printed circuit copper line that is affected by the prepreg copper nature and the etching process.

System requirements were:
a. The tester should work by measuring the line resistance and comparing it to a golden standard. The measurement is to be carried by the Four Point Probe method in RF, where the two current probes are fixed, and the two voltage probes are mobile.
b. Employ a round headed soft spring probe. This requirement is meant to prevent a situation in which the measurement process itself affects the results by creating a scratch or a dig in the RF line, a situation that may change the RF line and disqualify the circuits. c. The two voltage probing points will move in a range of 12cm along the length of copper line.

.The fixture has a window to visually examine the sample under test


 A canister for safe sample examination
This canister is used for preparing a sample of a fuming toxic and corrosive liquid for an electro-optical characterization test.
The test procedure is carried while the sample is encapsulated inside the canister, and includes: an electrical test that is done by probing  and an optical test that is done by examining the illuminated material. The canister includes a sample chamber with a viewing window, a sample placement mechanism, a  probing circuit and a light source.
The sample is loaded to (or removed from) the canister inside a glove box. Once loaded, the canister can be safely taken out of the glove box to a test bench for characterizing the material. All system components were realized from corrosion-resistant materials.

A bonding setup using UV light guides


 Custom bonding jigs
CSTM has accumulated extensive experience in realizing and implementing calibration and bonding processes for both UV curing and heat curing.
The challenges in realizing bonding jigs are:
a. Surface preparation that is close (in time) to the application of the  adhesive.
b. Fast fixation (important for throughput)
c. No displacement between the end of calibration to the fixing
d. No displacement during fixation and curing

A jig used to polish a cylindrical lens. A clamping slider rides a lapping table.


A cylindrical lens polishing jig
This jig is used for manually polishing the flat surface on the "D" shaped cylindrical lens. The raw material is a glass rod with given dimensions and index of refraction. The rod is clamped in the slider, which rides a lapping table. The area to be removed protrudes at the bottom of the slider above a stopper. The polishing is done on a series of lapping papers.

An in-line process jig for thinning of LEDs


LED thinning jig
This processing jig allows thinning of  a LED bulb (epoxy encapsulated diameter 5 mm). The ultimate goal is a cascade of LED lamps bonded together cheek to cheek and connected in series (see top left in the picture on the left)
The requirements from the jig where:
a. keeping flatness throughout the polishing process
b. parallel cheeks
c. capacity of five LEDs per round
d. a small desktop size device that is  manually operated
These requirements were realized by a parallelepiped construction in which the LEDs were clamped in the right orientation and fixed to it's bottom part, and a lapping slider rider which manually travels on its upper part.
